I am seriously outraged right now. I went into school today and was sent to the principal’s office not even 5 minutes inside the building. I was asked if I had any other clothes with me to which I responded I did not and was told I would NOT be sent to my classes if I didn’t call someone to come bring me clothes.

I refused.

I told her that my mother is the only one who lives with me and that she was at work and could not come bring me clothes.

To which she responded

“Well I’m not sending you to your classes like that, you can come into my office and do some work but unless we get a parental figure to come bring you clothes you will not be going to class, it’s too much of a distraction and offensive to your fellow students.”

excuse me but what is so offensive about my shorts. I have worn this outfit numerous times during the school year, and only now that it has started to get nice outside have they been stricter on what the girls in this high school wear.

DO YOU KNOW HOW HOT IT FUCKING IS OUTSIDE.

The office called my mom and told her that “my way of dressing could be offensive or distracting to the students and most importantly, the teachers.”

I’m a junior in high school, but just because i’m a junior does NOT MEAN I WILL STAND FOR YOUR BULLSHIT SLUT-SHAMING AND SEXIST DRESS CODE.

Instead of telling the girls to feel victimized and shamed for what they wear, like tell your shitty staff to stop being such perverts and to look away and seriously, if they have such issues with my clothing that they can’t help themselves then why are you allowed to be a teacher in the first place.

My body is not something to be ashamed of, and I will not “change” to fit into your shit society of misogynistic ideals.

OK guys, I’m finally going to come out. I am totally and completely incapable of grasping what the FUCK is wrong with judginess. I literally can NOT wrap my head around it.

I was “taught about sex in the gutter” as they say, which was then supplemented when I stole a bio textbook, and filled in by the surprisingly good sex-ed available in suburban So-Cal in the 70’s. By the time my Parental Units were capable of broaching the subject I had also scrounged used copies of other educational materials, and should rather have GIVEN that talk than gotten it.

At the beginning, there was of course a lot of warped bullshit available to learn from other kids who knew almost as little I did. But I still believe today one thing I did learn at the ripe old age of 7, in the “show me” stage: If someone wants to get naked with you, you win.

If someone has Something They Want To Show You, you win. If someone likes you, you win. If someone loves you (whether they can say it or not), you win. If someone CAN say they love you, you win. If someone wants to make sweet, sweet love to you, you win. And if you want to say or do or show any of those things to anyone else, THEY WIN TOO. I didn’t understand a damn thing about neurotransmitters, positive reinforcement, game theory, or reciprocal altruism, but I knew that EVERYBODY CAN WIN AT THE SAME TIME.

Sex — ALL sex, from hand-holding through chandelier-swinging BDSM orgies involving bicycle pumps and chicken costumes — is specifically done to make people feel better. People who want to have a lot of sex want to feel better. They often (but not always) want their partner to feel better. Despite millenia of lies and misinformation, they usually (hopefully almost always) want their partner to feel better. They usually want to be around someone or someones who feel better because of their presence.

So now we come to the crux of the matter. How TF can you not LOVE this setup? This stuff is GREAT. I want the people I love to have lots of great sex. But more than that.

I want the people I have to deal with to have lots of great sex. Who do you think is probably easier to deal with; someone who has loads of happy-hormones in their system, or someone who is pissy about not getting laid this century? I want world leaders to have happy sex-lives and nothing to prove. People with crappy sex-lives are going to be more irritable, and “irritable” is not a comforting description of someone with weapons of mass destruction. I want the cop on the corner to be too busy being happy to ticket me for made-up bullshit, and if he’s walking around with a vibe up his ass all day he probably is. I want my barrista, my waiter, my dentist, my doctor, and all my neighbors to be joyously shtupping each other, and making life better for each other, and by extension, me.

Will someone please explain why there is ANYONE in the world who disagrees with me?

Here’s a quick preview of the kind of analysis I’ve been doing on my dissertation (based on a survey of 311-389 respondents).

Respondents were asked to rank five definitions of polyamory in order of preference and then, if they wished, to share their own thoughts and definitions on what they think polyamory means. The above table is a summary of those comments.

The highest rated definition was written by Morning Glory Zell in 1999, after the Oxford Dictionary asked her for a definition. It is:

“The practice, state or ability of having multiple lovers at the same time with the full knowledge and consent of all partners involved”

The lowest rated definition was the actual Oxford Dictionary definition, which they added years later after rejecting Zell’s submission. It is:

“The practice of engaging in multiple sexual relationships with the consent of all the people involved”

General rule of thumb: if you must define a group of people, then listen to that group of people.

If you must define a group of people, then listen to that group of people.

As an aside, I mentioned this in another recent post, but the American English Oxford definition is “the philosophy or state of being in love or romantically involved with more than one person at the same time.“ Looks like they’re starting to catch up, at least insofar as acknowledging how the term is used here in the States.

Because when people hear the term feminist, they honestly think of women burning bras. Dude, have you ever bought a bra? No one would burn them because they’re freaking

Because we now have a record number of women in the Senate … which is a measly 20 out of 100. Congrats, USA, we’ve gone up to 78th place for women’s political representation, still below China, Rwanda and Iraq.

Because recently I had a discussion with a couple of well-meaning Drake University guys, and they literally could not fathom how catcalling a woman walking down University Avenue is creepy and sexist.
Could. Not. Fathom.

Because on average, the tenured male professors at Drake make more than the tenured female professors.

Because more people on campus complain about chalked statistics regarding sexual assault than complain about the existence of sexual assault. Priorities? Have them.

Because 138 House Republicans voted against the Violence Against Women Act. All 138 felt it shouldn’t provide support for Native women, LGBT people or immigrant women. I’m kind of confused by this, because I thought LGBT people and women of color were also human beings.
Weird, right?

Because a girl was roofied last semester at a local campus bar, and I heard someone say they think she should have been more careful. Being drugged is her fault, not the fault of the person who put drugs in her drink?

Because Chris Brown beat Rihanna so badly she was hospitalized, yet he still has fans and bestselling songs and a tattoo of an abused woman on his neck.

Because out of 7 billion people on the planet, more than 1 billion women will be raped or beaten in their lifetimes. Women and girls have their clitorises cut out, acid thrown on them and broken bottles shoved up them as an act of war. Every second of every day. Every corner of the Earth.

Because the other day, another friend of mine told me she was raped, and I can no longer count on both my hands the number of friends who have told me they’ve been sexually assaulted. Words can’t express how scared I am that I’m getting used to this.

Because a brief survey of reality will tell you that we do not live in a world that values all people equally and that sucks in real, very scary ways. Because you know we live in a sexist world when an awesome thing with the name “feminism” has a weird connotation. Because if I have kids someday, I want my son to be able to have emotions and play dress up, and I want my daughter to climb trees and care more about what’s in her head than what’s on it. Because I don’t want her to carry keys between her fingers at night to
protect herself.

Because feminism is for everybody, and this is your official invitation.

Let me tell you a thing, about an amazing man named Patrick Stewart

I went to Comicpalooza this weekend and I was full of nervous energy as I was standing in line to ask Sir Patrick Stewart a question at his panel. I first had to thank him for a speech he had given at amnesty international about domestic violence towards women . I had only seen it a few months ago but I was still dealing with my own personal experience with a similar issue, and I didn’t know what to call it. After seeing Patrick talk so personally about it I finally was able to correctly call it abuse, in my case sexual abuse that was going to quickly turn into physical abuse as well. I didn’t feel guilty or disgusting anymore. I finally didn’t feel responsible for the abuse that was put upon me. I was finally able to start my healing process and to put that part of my life behind me.

After thanking him I asked him “Besides acting, what are you most proud of that you have done in you life (that you are willing to share with us)?”. Sir Patrick told us about how he couldn’t protect his mother from abuse in his household growing up and so in her name works with an organization called Refuge for safe houses for women and children to escape from abusive house holds. Sir Patrick Stewart learned only last year that his father had actually been suffering from PTSD after he returned from the military and was never properly treated. In his father’s name he works with an organization called Combat Stress to help those soldiers who are suffering from PTSD.

They were about to move onto the next question when Sir Patrick looked at me and asked me “My Dear, are you okay?” I said yes, and that I was finally able to move on from that part of my life. He then passionately said that his mother had done nothing to provoke his father and that even if she had, violence was never, ever a choice a man should make. That it is in the power of men to stop violence towards women. The moderator then asked “Do you want a hug?”

Sir Patrick didn’t even hesitate, he smiled, hopped off the stage and came over to embrace me in a hug. Which he held me there for a long while. He told me “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.” I couldn’t stop thanking him. His embrace was so warm and genuine. It was two people, two strangers, supporting and giving love. And when we pulled away he looked strait in my eyes, like he was promising that. He told me to take care. And I will.

Sir Patrick Stewart is an absolute roll model for men. He is an amazing man and was so kind and full of heart. I want to let everyone know to please find help if you are in a violent or abusive house hold or relationship. There are organizations and people ready to help. I had countless people after the panel thanking me for sharing the story and asking him those questions. Many said they went through similar things. You are not alone.

I want to go to THIS guy’s church.

This is an hour-long talk from Skepticon, about the need for Humanist groups to create local communities spaces for freethinkers to meet.

I historically have found Community hard to come by. I was often dragged to church as a child, and grew up knowing that those people were Not My People. So I grew up without a People. As an adult I have found some places where I could be with My People; but finding time to GET to those places has often been expensive and difficult. And so I am not part of any congregation, and usually content to be so. But it is often hard; occasionally in subtler and more pervasive ways than harder than I can easily express.

I suspect that many MANY churchgoers go because they need to be Part Of Something, and many more go because they Need People. If there were options for people to meet that any kind of belief in water walking or talking snakes, I imagine those other groups might dry up and fall off just THAT much quicker.
